Raghu Dixit’s remarkable rise has been nothing short of spectacular. The former Bharatnatyam dancer’s rousing singer-songwriting is not only the symbol of metropolitan India’s blossoming alternative music scene, but is also making waves internationally. Raghu has been referred to as India’s biggest cultural export of recent times.
Raghu’s debut album became the biggest selling non-Bollywood record in India (2009). He has also written scores for two Kannada-language (his native tongue) movies with a hit Hindi movie Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge out in 2011.
Raghu is a charismatic powerhouse, singing in a fluid combination of English, Hindi and Kannada backed by a quintet wearing bright lunghis (sarongs), and beads, who have the air of a rag-tag bunch of musicians you might stumble across jamming around a fire, on a Goan beach at 3am.
